The United Nations Postal Administration (UNPA) will pre-launch the 'International Jazz Day' (Date of Issue: 30 April) at the WESTPEX show.  There are three mini sheetlets of 12 stamps each-one sheet in US denomination, one sheet in Swiss francs and one sheet in Euros. Mr. Edward Hynes, UNPA senior staff member, will be attending the show.  Additionally, there is a WESTPEX sponsored Youth Area with free stamps and supplies for young collectors. On Sunday April 27th a Boy Scout Merit Badge program is scheduled, which was a sell-out last year.

Continuing the tradition of a local show theme, WESTPEX 2014 will be celebrating the 75thth anniversary of the Golden Gate International Exposition (GGIE). The GGIE celebrated the completion of the Bay Area's two major bridges, the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge (1936) and the Golden Gate Bridge (1937). WESTPEX will offer a special Cinderella souvenir sheet as well as cachet covers.  The show will officially open at 10 AM Friday April 26 and you will not want to miss this 54th WESTPEX Stamp Show.  Complete show details, reservations, schedules, and theme story may be found at www.westpex.org.

WESTPEX Salutes the 75th Anniversary

of the Golden Gate International Exposition

Opening Ceremony

Color, Pageant, and Beauty of Treasure Island, 1939/1940

With spectacular original color photographs by Michael S. Turrini

In 1939 the Golden Gate International Exposition opened on a man-made island, called Treasure Island, in the middle of San Francisco Bay, adjacent to the center anchorage of the recently completed San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge.  The Fair, as the locals called it, featured pavilions, food, and entertainment from countries that rim the Pacific Ocean.

The 75th anniversary of this Golden Gate International Exhibition was chosen as the theme for this year's WESTPEX Stamp Show, in keeping with the WESTPEX tradition of featuring a local event on its cachets and show souvenir sheets.

The WESTPEX show Opening Ceremony will take place at 9:30 AM on Friday April 25th in the Jr. Ballroom of the hotel. After introductions of dignitaries, WESTPEX 2014 cachet designer Bill Dwyer will chat with the Fair's ambassador of good will "The Pirate Girl," Zoe Dell Lantis Nutter, portrayed by Debbie Brady of the US Postal Service.  The Pirate Girl toured the United States, promoting the GGIE and appeared at numerous events, each having a story of its own.

This will be followed with a showing of original color photographs taken at the exposition.

Mr. Michael S. Turrini has assembled a group of these memorable color photographs into a PowerPoint presentation, which will be shown at the close of the ceremony as the free souvenir cachets are distributed. The cachet designer will autograph the covers on request.

Mr. Turrini will also show and narrate these photographs in more detail following the opening ceremony.  The building of the fair and its presence for two years was an economic boost for San Francisco during the Great Depression. These spectacular color photographs, essentially a new innovation at that time, offer an opportunity to view part of the history of San Francisco, which famed San Francisco columnist Herb Caen called "Baghdad by the Bay." If one is into glorious nostalgia of the past, this presentation of the Fair is not to be missed.

United Nations Postal Administration Pre-Launch Event at WESTPEX

The WESTPEX 2014 Stamp show has been chosen by the United Nations Postal Administration for its pre-launch sale of three mini-sheets commemorating the International Jazz Day.  Although the official first day of issue is April 30, 2014, the three sheets will be available for sale on April 25-27 at the UNPA Booth B in the Jr. Ballroom lobby at the WESTPEX venue, the San Francisco Airport Marriott Waterfront Hotel.  There will be no special cancel of these UN commemorative stamps.

The three mini-sheets, each differing in color and design, are denominated in U.S. cents, Euros, and Swiss francs. The twelve stamp images on each mini-sheet are all different, depicting various musical instruments and several unnamed artists in a spectacularly colored collage format.

After nearly a twenty-year absence, the UNPA will have a booth at this year's WESTPEX show in the Jr. Ballroom lobby, next to the U.S. Postal Service. Mr. Edward Hynes, currently Acting Chief of the UNPA, will participate in the WESTPEX 2014 Opening Ceremony at 9:30 AM Friday, April 25. He will be at the UNPA booth for the duration of the show, offering these new International Jazz Day mini-sheets along with other available UNPA issues. WESTPEX is delighted to have his attendance.

Mr. Sergio Baradat, a staff member of the UNPA, designed this new UNPA issue.  Mr. Baradat was the designer of the 2008 US Tropical Fruit stamps. One may recall he attended the Tropical Fruit stamps First Day of Issue ceremony at WESTPEX, sponsored by the U.S. Postal Service.

Once again WESTPEX is honored to have been chosen by the UNPA for this new issue, just as it was in 1994 when the UNPA chose WESTPEX for its First Day of Issue ceremony of their Protection for Refugees issue.

This UNPA special event contributes to the efforts of the WESTPEX show committee to offer collectors and visitors exciting new things.  This is in addition to the fine WESTPEX bourse of dealers, the competitive exhibition, the Schuyler Rumsey auction, the APS "On the Road" course (Collecting Western U.S. Postal History), along with the numerous society and study group meetings and dinner functions. And all of this is under the roof of a great venue for a stamp show. Who said the "Greatest Show on Earth" has to be under a tent?

It is a golden opportunity to meet some of the stalwarts of the field and to learn some of the mysteries and revelations of western postal history.
