Sunday, April 26, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Beginner collectors are welcome and encouraged. Discover the fun of stamp collecting. Build a collection on a topic or country interesting to you. During this merit badge workshop, you will receive a stamp-collecting starter kit and access to hundreds of stamps provided by stamp dealers. Meet our guest, NSDA Non-Profit Stamp Dealer, Phil Kumler, who routinely instructs youth as a vendor and provides free stamps and first-day covers to build your own collection from a specific country, topic, or endangered animal.

You will receive a special guided tour of the show.

Stamp Collecting Merit Badge Workshop Info

What: WESTPEX® Stamp Show - Have fun learning stamp collecting with lots of free stamps to build your first collection. WESTPEX is the biggest stamp show in the West and features stamp dealers from around the world, amazing world-class exhibits, and the U.S. Post Office.

When: Sunday, April 26, 2026 from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. Please arrive on Sunday by 8:45 am to be ready for the program to start at 9:00 am sharp.

The WESTPEX® stamp show is open Friday 10:00 am - 6:00 pm, Saturday 10:00 am - 6:00 pm, and Sunday 10:00 am to 3:00 pm.

Costs: The Stamp Collecting MB class is $14 per scout, plus the cost of supplies given to the scouts. Admission to the stamp show is normally $5, but is free for Scouts in uniform & their parents. The Marriott Hotel charges for self-parking. Please consider parking in the neighborhood business streets nearby in order to park for free.

Please bring the following:

  • Stamp Collecting Merit Badge Book. Please read & review it before the workshop.

  • Merit Badge blue card signed by your Troop ScoutMaster or previous connection in Scoutbook to Mr. Philip Avery

  • Bring a brown bag lunch and a snack. Water will be available. Please do not bring any other beverages as they may spill over the materials.

  • Homework: Your completed stamp design for #7a.

  • Wear your class A uniform. This is required.

Will you be able to complete the merit badge?

Yes. The workshop covers all badge requirements. A small amount of prerequisite work is done before coming. Details will be provided after registration. If a Scout doesn’t finish the badge, then arrangements can be made to complete at a later date.

Registration:

Participation is limited to scouts registered in a Scouts BSA Troop.
Space is very limited, so get your information in early.
Parents are welcome to stay and listen to the program. Free tickets are available on request. Any parents who are registered the BSA are encouraged to wear their uniforms too. Any parent volunteers willing to help teach will be welcome.

  • Please include a note about your stamp-collecting experience (none needed).

  • If the Scout has a special need, dietary, behavioral, or otherwise, then it is required to let us know. It will be handled with discretion.

More Information:

The stamp collecting starter kit includes tongs, hinges, mounts, stock pages, album pages, and packets of stamps all needed to complete this merit badge. There are hundreds of stamps to pick from to build your first stamp collection on a wide variety of topics around the world.
