Patterson combed through fifty years of WESTPEX archives — meeting minutes, Council Courier reports, programs, photographs, and the recollections of long-time committee people — over two and a half months of writing. In her preface she gave special thanks to Nestor Nuñez and George Shalimoff for editing and final proofing, and to Bill Lenarz and Dick Salz for additional proofreading. The book is dedicated to the more than two hundred volunteers who made the first fifty years of WESTPEX possible.

About the Web Version

The web pages under /history/ adapt Patterson’s chapters for screen reading rather than reproducing them verbatim. The voice, facts, dates, and notable quotations are hers; the connective narrative around them has been tightened, sub-headings added, and print-only artifacts (figure numbers, page references) removed. Direct quotations from committee members, chairmen’s program greetings, and committee statements are preserved word-for-word.

Image captions adapt the descriptive content of the book’s figure captions but drop the original “Fig. X.Y” numbering. Photographs of WESTPEX youth activities are presented as group or activity scenes without identifying individual children, in line with current expectations of online privacy.

Each chapter of the book maps roughly to one page on this site:
